To Fly

Statue of Sir Noel Coward
How is everyone? Hope your weekend was great. Did you do anything special? I did, and it was definately an essential experience. Posted pics so you can enjoy too ;). Most of my experiences I have not captured - as most moments are best enjoyed, treasured and then etched in the memory. One of the places mapped out to visit was St. Mary. The whole idea was to go to James Bond Beach to swim and frolice with but decided to surprise to detour, and boy was I happy I did!
The drive up, was on a rugged unimproved road to the most beautiful place I have ever seen! FIREFLY. Having been a long fan of the English playwright and celebrated man of letters, Sir Noel Coward and am also a fan of  Ian Flemming (James Bond), at last I was finally in the creative place of one of them! Firefly is where the most talented playwright, songwriter and accomplished actor penned most of his remarkable works.

Originally named "Lookout",  he paid homage to the luminous lightning bugs or "peeniewallies", (as we Jamaicans call them) by renaming the place Firefly. Perched high atop a hill, midway between Oracabessa and Port Maria, this historic house/museum is set on Eden-like grounds and was his retreat and sanctuary, from the constant social whirlwind and the hurly-burly world of the theater. Coward also hosted famous friends and admirers, as the place became a retreat for them during winter.

Upon entering the house I was surprised how simple it was, considering that he often entertained royalty and famous people. Although completed with an outdoor swimming pool (now covered), a small simple white stucco house is not what you might picture as the home of a world famous playwright. Pictures were taken with my iPhone 4s (which I'm so impressed with), so forgive me, as I have no images of the inner part of the house as my battery died and the husband's own barely had any charge too. But check out this youtube video I found and also this one featured on fire-fly.com. We were shown a biographical video of his life and achievements, saw a photographic exhibit of his many celebrated guests, and displays of Sir Noel's paintings and belongings.

With expansive lawns and a panoramic view of the Caribbean sea, one can imagine how at peace he must have been especially when it was time to write. A peace that was indeed valuable. Here Sir Noel is buried on the exact spot where he enjoyed his nightly cocktails.

Also:

A FEW INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT NOEL COWARD
 - In 1965 he was one of the first men to undergo plastic surgery.

 - He turned down the following roles (all of which brought great acclaim to the actors who played them): Professor Higgins in "My Fair Lady" (which went to Rex Harrison), the King in "The King and I" (which went to Yul Brynner), Colonel Nicholson in "The Bridge on the River Kwai" (which went to Alec Guiness) and Harry Lime in "The Third Man" (which went to Orson Welles).

Have a Happy Monday!

MAS-sive

Once again Bacchanal was in the air and on Sunday the Hedonistic vibe was expressed and felt by persons - from all walks of Jamaica. Beginning at 5 am, I started rendering my services as makeup. With sleep still in the eyes from a long night before, my adrenaline came from having to work and doing what I enjoy and love doing the most. So by 5:30 am, after 3 cups of coffee the lethargic feeling had passed.
Most of my new clients this year were corporate and first timers to carnival and also had a carnival veteran. But I always look forward to my repeat clientele from Hillel High School. Youth and exuberance are always a fun combination.
I did not have an assistant, so taking pictures was tricky - as I was pressed for time.
Check out some of my pics I could find below. Was a lil task finding most of  corporate clients, as I guess they were having too much fun - so they had a  laissez-faire attitude towards the cameras ;).

Yessir I shaved the head too ;)

"Bruk it dung" di road and burn it up

Ryan Lue-Clarke Photography
On Sunday after you have done the full deed of "bruking it dung di road", and you are home fostering that sunburn Monday morning. What to do?
Obviously sunscreen is great and putting on the highest factor available - no matter what may still get you sizzled.
Skin burns, because the UV rays from the sun denatures vitamins and omegas and other things in the outer layers of the skin - which then may turn you into a total barbecue.
So after cooling the sunburn (cool shower) you need to restore the vitamin and omega balance.

Here are some tips:
Preparation H is known solely for relief of Hemorrhoids, but this is perfect for sunburn relief. Be sure that no heat is being trapped into skin before applying. Its also great in removing bags from under eyes.

Create a paste with Quaker Oats and then place in microwave. After paste has cooled down rub unto skin.

Aloe Vera is great for alot of things and sunburn is one of them. If you do not have access to aloe vera spears, you may use aloe vera gel.

There is alot of them available in the market now, but be sure to find one with the most natural ingredients.

These are just a few tips, but luckily as with most Mas - every year it rains. But if you have very sensitive skin (like myself) you may you still feel that burn. Did mas one year and I definately "went dung to di grung" and was indeed a hottie - I was on fire after!.

I am sure these tips will help; and please ensure to remove ALL makeup after, as not to clog pores.

Happy Mas!
