The best methods of slimming

Wrestlers cutting weight to compete in a weight class is nothing new. Unfortunately, many of these athletes take on unhealthy methods to lose weight. When weight loss is done in a healthy way, the wrestler can become stronger and more competitive in a lower weight class.

An estimated 25% to 67% of wrestlers use techniques such as over exercise, calorie restriction, fasting and different dehydration methods to lose weight. Wrestlers tend to believe this type of action will improve their performance, but in reality this usually only makes things worse.

Dehydration is a wrestler’s worst enemy
Dehydration is a main health concern when losing weight quickly. It occurs when a wrestler cuts off their intake of fluids. Dehydration is the worst method of losing weight since it causes quick decline in strength, endurance and mental alertness.

Symptoms of dehydration can become noticeable after as little as 2% loss of normal water volume. Drinking too little water in combination with heavy exercise may cause cramps or, in extreme cases, heatstroke and swelling of the brain which causes seizures and hypovolemic shock.

A simple, efficient way of determining proper hydration is to check urine color. Dark urine (similar to apple juice) indicates dehydration and clear urine indicates adequate hydration.

Extreme reduction in calories can result in strength loss
Malnutrition is also pretty common among wrestlers trying to lose weight quickly. Dehydration combined with extreme calorie reduction can result in a loss of strength, muscular endurance, stamina and concentration. Sudden unhealthy weight loss can mean that a wrestler is not getting essential nutrients like protein, calories, B vitamins, iron and zinc; this can cause depression, muscle atrophy and lower testosterone levels. Many wrestlers have gone as far as vomiting before weigh-ins in order to make a specific weight class for a wrestling match.

Every high school wrestling program in American is required to use the national hydration assessment tests to determine if a wrestler is fit to wrestle. These tests are intended to analyze body fat percentages at the alpha weight and establish how much weight a wrestler can lose each week. When a wrestler reaches the minimum body fat percentage of 7% for boys or 12% for girls of their alpha fat composition, the wrestler cannot lose any more weight due to competition rules.

This system was put in place to ensure healthy weight loss and to minimize the harmful side effects of rapid weight loss. In Colorado, for health and safety reasons, the state’s weight control program requires hydration testing with a specific gravity not greater than 1.025, which is tested immediately prior to the body fat assessment. Any wrestler’s assessment that is below 7% for boys and 12% for girls must have a release form signed by a healthcare professional to participate in an upcoming event. This release won’t allow a wrestler to participate at a weight class below that for which the initial assessment allows. A 2 lb. variance above the scratch weight is permitted at the time of certification if signed by the parent and a physician.

Tips for healthy weight loss for wrestlers

Healthy weight loss tips:
Drink plenty of water. It is not worth cutting the weight if you can’t wrestle due to dehydration! It’s best to get a drink every 10-15 minutes at the gym and at least every 3-4 hours during the day.
Reduce the fat in your diet: fatty foods may taste good, but are higher in calories. Learn and know what food sources are high in fat and avoid them. Learn what foods are low in fat and eat them.
Eat smaller, more frequent meals: keep snacks with you. This will keep you from over eating during a sit down meal and also increase your metabolism.

Maintain strength training. You want to keep the strength you gained in the off season.
If you snack, eat fruits or pretzels instead of chips and candy.

Practice good nutrition by eating a balanced diet with a variety of foods. Follow guidelines for a healthy diet. If you are restricting your intake, a daily vitamin/mineral supplement is helpful. A basic supplement which meets 100% of the RDI required nutrients is all you need.
Slow loss is good loss: Start losing weight early, focusing on 1 to 2 pounds per week. This will assume that the weight which you lose is mostly fat. Weight loss of more than 2-3 pounds will result in things you don’t want like muscle loss.
Get plenty of sleep.
Unhealthy weight loss methods:
Don’t use sauna suits and garbage bag shirts. This method will overheat you very quickly. They are NOT a safe or productive way to lose weight. Sauna suits only make you lose water weight faster causing dehydration.
Don’t fast. Starving yourself to lose weight is harmful to your body. You should try to eat healthy everyday. Not eating will make you tired and you may start to feel sick at times throughout the day.
Don’t drink too much caffeine (soda, coffee, etc.), as this will cause you to lose wa

Steps to take care of the body

With a season change upon us, it's important to take extra good care of ourselves. Therefore, I've designed this little 20-step plan, full of tips on how to re-vamp without feeling hungry or doing anything too extreme.
Be prepared to take it easy and wake up the next day feeling better than ever.
1. Start your day with a warm cup of water and lemon.
Ditch the caffeine and instead enjoy a cup of warm water, with the juice of half a lemon and 1 teaspoon of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar. This sets you up for good digestion, boosts your metabolism, and will make your liver very thankful. It’s also extremely hydrating and alkalizing, unlike caffeine, which is very acidic and sure to dehydrate you. Caffeine also exhausts our liver and increases our levels of cortisol, which can lead to an inability to eliminate toxins or efficiently burn fat. Yikes!
2. Drink clean, filtered water all day.
Your water should be either warm or at room temperature or warm so your body doesn’t have to waste any of your energy warming it up before it can be beneficial and hydrating. It will also purge you of toxins and increase elimination. And don’t forget, hydration is the key to vitality and health. After all, we're made of 75% water.
Bored of regular water? Try infused water! Some of my favorite combinations are: strawberry and mint, peach and sage, cucumber and basil.
3. Start your day with greens.
Have a green juice or a green smoothie for breakfast. (Or both!)
3. Meditate.
Or simply sit and focus on the breath for at least 1 to 5 minutes or preferably 15 to 20 min.
4. Relax.
It's time to get comfy! Watch your favorite movie or read a good book.
5. Skip the sugar.
Make sure you skip sugar and drink some deliciously healing herbal tea throughout the day. Teas are filled with antioxidants and very satisfying. My favorite right now is peppermint or vanilla. If it’s too hot outside for tea, simply make a big batch and place in the fridge for a refreshing drink.
6. Use affirmations.
Write down a few affirmations on a Post-It note and place them on the fridge, bathroom mirror, or any place you're sure to see them frequently. Throughout the day, repeat them to yourself. One of my favorites is, “Take action, live with purpose, be grateful.” It helps keep me motivated.
7. Snack on activated walnuts.
They’ll satisfy you as well as provide you with brain power. How? Walnuts are a prehistoric food and they contain omega-3 fatty acids (which are usually found in fish sources such as salmon). They help stimulate brain and nervous system.
8. Read what inspires you.
Pick a few articles from blogs and websites that you find inspiring and read them throughout the day.
9. Chew!
Chewing is essential for optimal digestion (and therefore, for a healthy weight and waistline). Try chewing each bite 30 times as a goal. Since you’re having such a relaxing day, you can surely make more of an effort towards this today. Chew, chew and chew some more.
10. Eat in peace.
Be in a peaceful place while you’re eating each meal today; physically and mentally. You should make an effort for this every day, but today is the day to be more conscious of it since you’re making all the rules.
11. Dream big.
Make a list of your 3 Big Goals and 3 Small Goals, as of right now.
12. Feeling creative?
Make a vision board! Use magazines or the internet to make a collage of images that remind you of your most important goals and dreams. Look at this board every day. Visualize these goals happening. This is proven to be very powerful. (Oprah actually uses this strategy!)
13. Light some incense.
My favorite at the moment is white sage. (It's very peaceful.)
14. Have another fresh juice with carrot, beetroot, celery, ginger and lemon.
It will give you an energy boost and it's super delicious, the perfect boost and contains tons of vitamins and minerals.
15. Take a bath and spoil yourself with the works.
Use everything! Aromatherapy, bath bubbles, bath salts, and candles. (If using candles, make sure they're non toxic. Look for ingredients like soy wax, beeswax, and vegetable wax, which won't fill your lungs with toxins.)
16. Enjoy some low-key exercise.
Connect with nature by walking barefoot on the grass or beach (also great for getting your daily dose of Vitamin D), do some yoga, or simply stretch. Endorphins will surface and lift your spirit and immune system higher.
17. Take a nap.
And don't feel guilty about it.
18. Cook for yourself.
Try making a new, healthy recipe you’ve been wanting to try.
19. Laugh.
Call your best friend or watch a funny TV show. Laughing is good for the soul and will actually put you in a good (or better) mood.
And finally...
20. Use lavender.
Put some lavender oil on your temples for a calming, relaxing sensation. It's sure to soothe you and it smells fantastic.

To invest or not to invest? That is the luxurious question.

Hey everyone! How has your week been? Well the bloggie will be much ado about nothing with fashion and makeup - for now. As my articles and blog posts cannot correlate...conflict of interest I suppose. Hopefully the boss  will be more open...eventually ;). As for now taking everything in stride and growing patiently in my new post.

Today's blog is about - what really is the difference between purchasing luxurious brands and lower end brands?. My friends and fam all know that I am sucka for deals, and will admit that Forever 21 has been one of my fave go to stores. Am not averse to wearing luxurious brands but being practical makes my bank account looks sassy, will not hang my hat higher than it can reach - for now ;).

Sheer equipment blouse, Bloomingdale's: $218.00, said to be made in the USA.
Sheer equipment blouse with convertible sleeves, Forever21: $14.80, said to be imported.
Saw this article recently, and it tickled my brain, are those who are in support of these fashion chains, truly being wasteful? How many times can these items be worn before they give up the ghost? What about the 1% that believe in investment pieces and for the most part those who are considered simply as "label whores"? And there are those who aren't really big on brand design awareness but would rather wear something "nice" and "reasonably priced"?

The belief is to save your money and put it towards a few well-chosen pieces that will not date and also one of the best ways to get lasting staple pieces in your wardrobe...and as for the luxury brand sector, the recession is well and truly over...But really, if you are sympathetic to those whose pockets aren't as sunken as those who can afford to support high end designers, there is one brand who has consistently supported the need for this market. When observed carefully and even not so microscopic with their blatant copying...y0u will see that Forever 21 has copied everyone...from big brands to smaller, independent designers. Once a fashion label run by a pair of friends named Moriah Carlson and Alice Wu, sued them for producing clothing out of a printed fabric that looks virtually identical to one of Carlson and Wu's original prints.

An example:

Top: Feral Childe's print. Bottom: Forever 21's.

Is copyright infringement flattery or against the law?

As one who pinches my dollar...and only browse the high end labels online or for the most part go window shopping or gladly scour through the sale racks of Macy's or Neiman Marcus for deals; I  have always been a big fan of luxury-goods companies. Why? the drive behind these labels - LVMH and Compagnie Financiere Richemont, which owns Cartier, have a license to print money...excuse me? how cool is that? These brands have a mystique and fascination that lasts and once owned, you can dust them off and wear all over again through different seasons. It is impossible to walk down the thoroughfares of luxury, from Rodeo Drive to the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore, without feeling it. Since the market hit bottom 3 years ago, stock in Tiffany's and LVMH has tripled, and Saks has more than quadrupled. By the way how's your portfolio doing?
But the lingering questions are: does clothing possess any artistic or aesthetic qualities that can be entirely separated from its functionality as a “useful item?” Second, would explicitly extending copyright to cover clothing, fit the constitutional foundation that supports all of copyright law? Does the law prohibit copycats, to continuously undercut the original designs of high end designers?

Forever 21 and Marc Jacobs Hudson Bag
When it comes to sales in luxury growth, 75 percent in luxury sales was in emerging markets such as China but the irony is this - most of Forever 21's clothing are said to be imported from there, where labor is cheap and clothes aren't made in the best environment or with the best materials (But I'm not going to touch on labor practices issues, because I'm not educated enough from the standpoint of an attorney to talk about it). For the first time in modern history, the Chinese buy more luxury goods than anyone else - they now account for 25 percent of the global market, edging out the Japanese.
Sidebar: A decade ago, the Chinese had just 2 percent of the market. Yes, the times they are chagin' fo' sho fo' sho.

Check out these knockoffs and you determine:

Diane Von Furstenberg vs Forever21
Tory Birch vs Forever 21
Marc Jacobs

Forever 21
Even "the devil" said so:

In a scene I remember quite keenly from The Devil Wears Prada..."the devil" said that trends start up at the top, and eventually work their way down to Walmart, and without knowing it, you're wearing a designer inspired garment...may have been said with much disdain but rings truth. In my opinion, Forever 21 is simply making fashion accessible to the general public, and when it's comes to fashion it should be a personal choice. There is room for everybody - why do you think high end vintage stores or even thrift shops exists? Some designers are now starting to catch on and are making lines for less expensive stores such as H&M because they realize if you cant beat them join them I suppose.
DIY is now the rage among coin conscious fashionistas, because frankly if you can why not?

"Fashion fades, only style remains the same". - Coco Chanel
Designer pieces as investments, is quite understandable, however, for most, spending $30 on a shirt, dress or blouse that might eventually go out of style, is quite comforting especially to the pockets.

So how will you invest?

Have a glam Thursday!

Your coffee table never looked this good

Vanessa Williams by Scott Barnes - Face To Face
Hey everyone, if you are one who loves beauty in jar...you probably have makeup artists that you follow for go to tips, yes? if no here is one to look up.
Do you remember Jeniffer Lopez aka J Lo in 2010, where she had this ethereal radiance that was visible every where she went?....and she exuded radiance from the red carpet to her videos? - Well the man behind her look was Scott Barnes. The famous "J Lo Glow" was a signature look that everyone was dying to imitate....Scott created a product called Body Bling, which he started using on her because his belief  is that "looking expensive is the sexiest thing a woman can do. It beats the h*ll out of looking cheap."

Personally, his books are must haves - they are a compendium of everything makeup artist Scott Barnes has learned during his 22 year career - packed with techniques for every area of makeup application. Like Kevin Aucoin (not comparing, but he is my fave), his books feature step-by-step photos outlining makeup techniques and products. He also provides commentary, on how he pinpoints a woman’s strongest asset and then build around it. I especially like that he highlights beauty rituals, must-have makeup items and inner and outer preparations, that a woman must embrace in order to look beautiful and radiate charisma...those my beautiful ones are key!

Body Bling is described as a “semi stain” that acts like a self tanner, when applied its like applying a heavily pigmented moisturizer all over your body.
Barnes creation was made to cover - covers age spots, spider veins, and freckling. He is also a strong advocate for self tanners, as he lost his brother to skin cancer (Melanoma) five years ago. It protects and saves your skin from the sun and can be easily washed away after it has been worn.

His other book is out, which features the symmetrically correct Kim Kardashian on the cover, and just like his first book is a good reference guide. Lovely coloured photos showing beautiful transformations, celeb features and of course instructions and techniques that were used. His books are good for mid level expertise and higher but its definately a must have. If you would like to have semi intimate lessons from him, he will be a featured blogger on People.

Here are some books that are on my coffee table, that you could look up if you like:

Kevin Aucoin
Sam Fine
Bobby Brown

Other reads:

Laura Mercier
Gucci Westman
Jackie Tyson
Pat MacGrath
Lisa Eldridge, these are just a few.

And because photography walks hand in hand with makeup, here are a few books to source:

Robert Avedon
David LaChapelle
Thiery Le Gous

I also sometimes research interview snippets done by artists from old Hollywood...just love the old glamor. Allan 'Whitey' Snyder, Marilyn Monroe's makeup artist, had some tips that to this day I think were very evolved for that time....he was very good at "creating" a look.

Go and devour!
Have a happy Tuesday.

The thing is Life isn’t meant

Life isn’t meant to be lived perfectly…but merely to be LIVED. Boldly, wildly, beautifully, uncertainly, imperfectly, magically LIVED. -Mandy  Hale

Every year I start off  with a blog of purpose, and this year the poignant points to convey - really was not emerging with me. So after days of pondering; I began to look back over the years at persons, who for one reason or another, is worth admiration...and decided to pinpoint attributes about them, that motivate or impress upon me. These include Artists, Astronauts,  Business women, Business men, Designers, Financial gurus, Government officials, Makeup Artists, Marxists, Media personalities, Musicians, People who have passed through or still is in my life, Poets, Revolutionists, Savants, Starlets, Sport officials, Techies, and Writers. One attribute that is very common with them is that, though their paths may have been different they all had one thing in common - they declared their future VERBALLY....and if any doubt was cast initially - there was no doubt to be had...as there was iota of truths to their declarations. This year I decided to share some of them with you. Firstly let me start off with one very important thing to acquire this year.

In 2012 the attempt to do this for the following year 2103...was quite unsuccessful to say the least. By the second month the jar had began to gather moth....by the fourth month it was smashed by accident...by the fifth month all was forgotten. Point being made? About half of us apparently make New Year's Resolutions each year. Exercise, weightloss, quitting drinking, quitting smoking, tone down on partying, spending excessively, working towards a qualification, travels etc....these are usually some of the most popular concerns. Guess what? Businesses know this too. At the right time (just around the turn of the year) we’re bombarded with adverts designed to attract people who’ve just resolved to change something important in their lives.

Willpower is one thing and isn’t very helpful, if the down-side of failure makes people despondent. To be more successful set achievable goals, break them down into doable steps, tell a close friend or family member about your plans, and reward yourself for successes. It’s also very important to be aware that we all occasionally make mistakes. People who are usually successful in achieving their resolutions, tend to accept this fact. Self analysis and a healthy dose of a little self-criticism ok. Intrinsically doing this at the beginning of the year, is always a good thing. Just don't be too hard on yourself when you have not met a goal, especially if you had bench-marked the timing.

As the man said....

Do you know that the source of most of your problems and gateway to success is within you - from the neck up? The power that is carried by our thoughts and words, is underestimated by most. They're so powerful that they can bring either blessings or curses into our lives, depending on their nature.
Getting rid of negative thinking is not enough. For example, I sometimes get horrible migraines and I would make statements like "Oh, this headache is killing me" .... sure enough it would last the whole day! Or someone sneezes and they may think "Oh, I'm probably getting the flu." These types of negative statements seem to come so naturally to all of us. We need to discipline ourselves to be more positive - it's not so easy! Our thoughts and words are like the rudder of a ship - they may seem small, but they affect the very direction of our lives. Reacting negatively, allows fear to take over our thinking. We begin to dwell on things that haven't even happened and may not happen. Our negative thoughts cause us to speak the words that will shape our future.

Recently CNN's anchor Zain Verjee, revealed that she battled Psoriasis with a rigid diet, will power and the mind . Some may say what is claimed at best, is only conjecture....but the proof is in the results.
“Whatever you feel, you become. It is your responsibility.”
- Osho

I'm sure in hindsight, you'll realize that you may have declared somethings over your life and they may have come to fruition - whether negative or positive.
Choosing better thoughts, and speaking positively will change and reap a better life. The temptation to think negatively is a constant temptation BUT we don't have to accept it. We have a choice.

"Death and life are in the power of the  tongue…."
 - Proverbs 18:21

Choosing life generating thoughts, will emit positive, powerful, life-giving words - that will naturally follow. Controlling our thoughts is one thing, controlling the mouth is another. You'll never control your mouth unless you first learn to control your mind. Our words will bring forth whatever we desire.

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
Genesis 1:3
A great example of how powerful words are....

Believing is the first important step to switching our thinking from being negative to positive...and making our future tangible. Remember, what's in our hearts and minds will come out of our mouths. Whatever desires we have, will become attainable based on those theorems.

1. Automatic positive thoughts allow for a mental foundation that puts your mind at ease. This in turn makes you better equipped to make difficult decisions and helps you to stop second-guessing yourself. With clear goals and less-clouded judgment, your motivation and desire to reach such goals will be increased since you will see them as attainable. Looking on the bright side can go long way.

2. Positive thinking may seem to only directly affect your mental health, but a shift in attitude can be just  as beneficial for your physical health. Negative thinking, however, activates centers of the brain that cause stress hormones to be released. This hormonal cascade, if not managed properly, can lead to many of the disorders and diseases that commonly afflict people today. In the long run, regularly harboring positive thoughts can make your body more resilient and help it combat ailments by releasing neurohormones to offset stress hormones.

3. In addition to helping your body on the inside, positive thinking can work wonders on your outer appearance too. Unmanaged stress may not be the root of skin problems, but it tends to be a trigger factor for pre-existing conditions such as acne and eczema. A simple smile (which already works to brighten your appearance) can quickly put you on the path of positive thinking. This, in turn, will keep those stress levels in check and help keep your skin clear. You will have a natural glow.

4. Perhaps one of the most important benefits of positive thinking is its ability to change the way you see yourself. Once you begin to have a more positive attitude, you'll begin build confidence and a sense of sureness, because you'll start to trust and believe in yourself. Remember, the first person you need to be in relationship with is yourself. By being kind to yourself and bringing yourself to positive thoughts, all the other benefits will gently unfold and only increase over time.

....And remember to smile -Nelson Mandela

See the glass half full, find the silver lining, look on the bright side...there are endless platitudes and cliches that are so regularly recited, they don't seem to carry much meaning. This seems especially true on the days when metaphorical rain pours down on your metaphorical parade, or when a storm cloud seems to be hovering over your head for days on end. But taking a closer look at optimism reveals these everyday turn of phrases actually have the right idea in mind.
Once you equip yourself with the proper tools to transform negative thoughts into positive ones, you'll begin to notice a change, not only in yourself, but in other aspects of your life from relationships to even your physical appearance :).

Passport to BeYOUty

Hey everyone, these sporadic postings has got to stop :)...but balancing time is not as easy as I want it to be but I'm working that out. Being here in the US, I realize that women invest alot in makeup and is also very dependent on it. Conducted business at a place once and I saw a woman who had the most beautiful skin, so I decided to compliment her. Her response as she gasped was "and I'm not even wearing my makeup". Normally I would think the reverse to wearing makeup, was wearing the naked face (that has no flaws) as a badge of honor (sort of) - as makeup is worn to enhance and conceal...but alas, I guess not.

Dabbing on a little concealer before leaving your house is normal, especially if you do it because you feel like you need it. So I got into google detective mode and found a new study by the Harris poll, that was conducted on behalf of the Renfrew Center Foundation which research eating disorders, and the poll shows that 44% of women feel unattractive without any makeup on.
If you've been swiping on the mascara since you were a pre-teen, the study also found that one-quarter of women started wearing makeup at age 13 or younger. Which one can see how a woman can feel totally confident without it. Oddly enough, a survey in the UK have shown that wearing less makeup can have positive effects on your career.  It was revealed that 1/3 of bosses believe women sometimes wear too much makeup to work.

Can't speak for all women, but perhaps we could try embracing our natural faces, if its even sometimes. To make the list of People Magazine’s ‘Most Beautiful’ list for 2013, is Kelly Rowland and inside the issue you can find her confidently posing with little to no makeup on. Such a natural beauty!.

Now as a makeup artist this means business for me, as it enables me to cater to the cosmetic needs of others...but I always root for - if you wear makeup often depending on your job, lifestyle etc. sometimes give your face a breather; trust me it will thank you! Beauty is diverse and makeup usage is interpreted by different cultures. What applies to one may not apply to the other.

Lets start with the bible shall we...yes I did say the Bible. Cosmetics have appeared in the Christian Bible, as frankincense and myrrh are brought to Jesus upon meeting him as a baby in the New Testament. Frankincense is an aromatic resin from specific trees in Oman, Yemen, and Somalia. It is used in incense as well as in perfumes. Myrrh is dried sap from trees in Yemen, Somalia, Ethiopia, and Jordan, which is used in mixtures of incense, as an additive to wine, in perfumes, toothpastes, lotions, and other modern day toiletries.

Jezebel who appears in the Old Testament, was a Phoenician princess who became a queen by marrying King Ahab of the Northern Kingdom - during the time the nation of Israel was divided into Northern (Israel) and Southern (Judah) kingdoms. She was described, as a woman who accents her eyes with cosmetics (around 840 B.C.).

Of course, there is no direct evidence that women in ancient Israel wore make-up, since there are no Israelite statues or images similar to Egyptian ones...But Israel was always influenced by its powerful neighbor to the south, and it is reasonable to suppose that this influence also affected Hebrew/Israelite women.

African culture and makeup practices goes way back, we are talking years! Makeup is used for traditional purposes and in areas of Africa that is very westernized, makeup is worn with that influence. Likewise African culture has also influenced Europe, where the sartorial and cosmetic businesses in Europe have elements shown in their products.

Beyonce in L'Officiel magazine.
Personally, I maintain that the dark face makeup is bothersome. Here's why: No particular tribe or religion is ever mentioned and there are literally hundreds of ethnic groups on the continent of Africa. Face paint (makeup) is used in many different ways. So if you're not specifically copying a particular people, religion or "ritual," then what you're really doing is just asserting that "face paint" is something "Africans" do. It's a very Western/Eurocentric way of thinking....In my Humble opinion.

Caucasian Model, Ondria Hardin poses as an “African Queen” for Numéro magazine

This is a VERY sensitive subject but "imitation is the highest form of flattery" it is said but is there a need to paint an entire white model black? I digress.

Cosmetics have been used in India, since the IV or V Century. Coal was used as a form of eyeshadow for both men and women. Vermilion, which is an opaque orange-red pigment derived from powdering Cinnabar (mercury sulfide), was used as blush to color the cheeks. However, it is Henna, more specifically Mehndi, the art of painting with henna on the hands and feet, which is perhaps the most well-known cosmetic application from this exotic land. In the American culture, henna is borrowed and used as a painless alternative to tattooing.

The Indian culture, is also known for their beautiful jewellery and clothes as well.

How a culture represents wearing makeup, clothes, jewellery and even skincare/skin regimen varies across the globe. These are now oftentimes borrowed by the western world and is even capitalized on a great monetary level.

Jamaica has also been influenced by various cultures - from our African heritage to the indentured servants (Indian, Chinese and White) whose descendants are now residents of the island...and we also "borrow" from other islands especially Trinidad, where carnival celebration is widely celebrated - makeup and costuming is replicated on some levels.

The coat of arms of Jamaica, is very indicative of what our culture is :). Globally most may consider us to be of only the black persuasion but the people of Jamaica are of many races.

Next post, I will give tips from different cultures that can be applied to your everyday life.

Thanks for reading, Happy Monday!
